The Guilford Foundation Awards $20,725 in Scholarships Awards

The Guilford Foundation (TGF) recently awarded $20,725 through 18 scholarship awards to graduating Guilford High School seniors (except where noted) who plan to pursue post-secondary education. The awards and honorees are as follows:

  • Elisabeth Adams Scholarship ($500 each): Mariam Kish & Keldon LaRose
  • Carl A. Balestracci Humanitarian Scholarship ($550 each): Giana Cardonita & Leo Westguard
  • Al & Gene Bishop Fund ($3,150): Noah Thomas
  • Richard Brooks Scholarship Fund ($1,000): Brielle Kendrioski
  • Stuart D. Burt Scholarship ($2,250): Ellis Riccio
  • Maureen Cyr Caruso Scholarship Fund ($1,000): Mia Tilton
  • Guilford ABC Scholarship ($2,000): Sumaiyah Lee
  • Jaffe Scholarship Fund ($1,300 each year for four years): Kush Patel
  • Stephen A. Looney Scholarship ($750 each): Alessandra Stankewich & Braden Stephens
  • Jake Penman Memorial Fund ($1,000): Juan Colberg-Martinez
  • Ralph Schipani Scholarship Fund ($750 each): Nicole Teply & Michael Kegel
  • Elizabeth M. “Lizzie” Schwanfelder Scholarship ($2,400): George Sanderlin
  • Kyle E. Smith Scholarship ($525): Karley Krickmier
  • Alison Varian Scholarship Fund for the Sound School ($1,000): Chloe Melillo

These students represent the best of Guilford’s future—they work after school jobs, they are active in politics, they volunteer at numerous organizations, they are in National Honor Society, play in orchestra and band, row crew, play baseball, softball, soccer, basketball & lacrosse, go on mission trips around the country, are honor students, are captains of their teams, lead Guilford’s Youth Advisory Group, are AP & International Baccalaureate scholars; participate in theater; tutor, and somehow sleep and go to school. The Guilford Foundation extends its deep congratulations to these remarkable scholars as they start the next chapter of their journey.

The Guilford Foundation Awards $68,400 in Competitive Grants

The Guilford Foundation (TGF) recently awarded $68,400 to organizations serving Guilford. These grants were awarded through TGF’s annual competitive grant making process.

TGF received 33 applications for funding—reflecting a 21% increase from 2018 in the amount requested for funding.  TGF was able to support 20 of those requests, including grants that relate to the environment, affordable housing, basic needs, arts and culture, and youth.

Guilford Foundation Commits $112,000 to Guilford in 2018

The Guilford Foundation (TGF) is pleased to announce that it has committed $112,000 for initiatives and organizations serving Guilford in 2018. This reflects 14 grants made through our competitive grant making (complete list below), 3 additional awards made through our emergent grant budget, 14 scholarship awards to graduating Guilford High School students, 14 grants from designated funds for local organizations, and investments in TGF-driven leadership initiatives (including the Shoreline Nonprofit Workshop Series).

TGF provided 14 grants though our competitive grant making process ranging from $1,000 to support a Habitat for Humanity build to a $10,000 signature grant to the Guilford Preservation Alliance’s Witness Stones Project to expand their programming in Guilford. Established in 1975 as a community foundation, the Foundation builds and maintains a charitable endowment valued at nearly $2.5 million and uses a portion of the annual income to address the needs of the Guilford community.

Guilford Foundation Commits over $120,000 to Guilford in 2017; Grant Budget Maxed for Year

The Guilford Foundation (TGF) is pleased to announce that we have committed over $120,000 for initiatives and organizations serving Guilford in 2017, the most ever and a 17% increase from fiscal year 2016. This reflects 13 grants made through our competitive grant making (complete list below), 12 scholarship awards to graduating Guilford High School students, 10 grants from designated funds for local organizations, and investments in TGF-driven leadership initiatives (including the Shoreline Nonprofit Workshop Series).

Guilford Foundation Provides $12,300 Worth of Scholarships to 12 College Bound Graduates

The Guilford Foundation recently presented scholarship awards totaling $12,300 to twelve Guilford High School graduates to help offset the costs of their education. The records of these remarkable students reflect their hard work and commitment to personal development and inspire hope in the future citizenry of our great town.

Donor-Advised Fund Provides the Flexibility for Education and Environmental Support

Acquiring an important piece of open space, providing environmental education, or maintaining trails and building a viewing platform are among the community investments envisioned by William (Bill) Bloss, who recently established the Jared Eliot Fund on behalf of an anonymous donor.

The donor-advised fund was started with a $200,000 contribution and will focus on environmental issues, the preservation of open space and improving educational services in Guilford. Bloss explains the unusual sequence of events that led to the establishment of this latest fund at The Guilford Foundation.

Guilford Art Center Launches Endowment Fund with the Guilford Foundation

With the support of a generous matching donor, the Guilford Art Center is launching an agency endowment with the Guilford Foundation, a permanent legacy fund to create long-term income for the Center.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with the Guilford Foundation to create this endowment, and extremely grateful to the Eder Family Foundation for matching the funds we raise,” says Art Center Executive Director Maureen Belden. “We hope this generosity will inspire others who wish to give in this way, which will help support all of the benefits of the arts in our shoreline community.”

“The mission of the Guilford Foundation is to connect people who care with causes that matter to them,” states Liza Janssen Petra, Executive Director of the Guilford Foundation. “In this case, the cause is the Guilford Art Center and the Eder Family Foundation is leading the charge among the people who care for the Center.
