Legacy Funds:

Women & Girls Fund / Barbara Kalinowski Fund

This is a restricted, field of interest fund. Field of interest funds are responsible for distributing grants to area non-profits within the specified focus areas.

When a vibrant, giving person like Barbara Gilmore Kalinowski is taken in the prime of her life, it is especially heartbreaking. Barbara died of cancer in 1968 at the age of 43. She had been very active in the Guilford community in whatever was asked of her without ever seeking publicity or notice. With no children of their own, Barbara and her husband Antoni dedicated their time and resources to the children of Guilford. “She was very outgoing and very giving,” recalls friend Lou Weady. “Her house was always open. She had access to the beach and was always sharing with others. She just loved kids, especially the Girl Scouts.”

At the time of her death, friends established a memorial fund at a local bank. Over time, administration of the fund became more challenging for them, so in 2001, they decided to move the fund to the Guilford Foundation. They created The Women and Girls Fund to offer a source of support for issues and services of importance to the woman and girls of Guilford. As the fund grows, the spirit of Barbara Kalinowski will continue to provide opportunities for women and girls to achieve their dreams.
